June 12, 2026 – Birds of Prey in the Park

It was a bit overcast and wet in the park this morning, which also meant that most of the tourists stayed indoors and the park was unusually quiet for a Friday morning. I love days like this. After the rain everything is so lush and green.

When we reached the Bethesda Fountain this morning, I looked up and saw this very large red tailed hawk perched upon Victory’s wing. There are at least 15 different species of birds of prey in Central Park! One morning, while at the playground with my grandson, we saw one swoop down and take a pigeon from the ground right in front of it! The four year old boy’s eyes were wide as saucers!

No such action today. The hawk simply stayed perched regally on watch.
