I’m a mother — kind of. No birth stories, or middle-of-the-night feedings on my résumé (at least not for these kids) but I am a stepmother to five, now grown, and a grandmother to two absolute treasures. On Mother’s Day, though, they’re busy honoring the women who actually did the heavy lifting — so my husband steps up to make sure I feel celebrated too.
This year, we decided the best mother’s Day started with the dog. Toffee, our current “child,” led us through a misty, fog-draped Central Park during the early off-leash hours — that magical window before 9am when the park belongs to the dogs and the people who love them. The fog eventually gave way to a gorgeous morning, and we rewarded ourselves with brunch and mimosas at Le Pain Quotidien near the Great Lawn, where they were handing out roses to the mothers.
